Malaysia then had the world largest palm oil refining industry with the establishment of 15 refineries in 1976 producing a capacity of 800,000 tonnes. A year later, in 1977, up to one million tonnes of palm oil were refined whereby 890,000 tonnes were crude palm oil (CPO) (Gopal, 1999). Refining factories began to flourish at that time.
